Women's Rights Movement
Causes: The Women's Rights Movement started because women were starting to realize that there might really be more opportunities for them outside of the home. They began to be tired of staying with the children while their husbands worked. Women wanted to get out into the world and show what they were made of, but society didn't let them do that. This problem was not spoken about for a long time. Many women felt the same way, but they didn't know others felt like them because nobody spoke up. It took the powers of activists and of people coming together to bring this problem to light and begin to change the way women were perceived and treated.
Course: Many events kept this movement going. Overall, it was because of the activists participation in the movement. Some wrote books, others made speeches, and still others lead protests to bring about change within the movement. The major thing that kept the movement going was the power of everyone coming together and speaking up, since for a long time, women didn't feel like they were able to speak about how they really felt; they just kept quiet and stayed home with the children like "they were supposed to." Many changes also occurred in response to the movement. Certain laws were passed that helped women advance in their lives. Once again, the most important change that came about because of the movement was that the issue was now being realized by many people across the nation. Everyone started to realize that it really was a problem, and that things needed to be changed. The movement did not always have everyone's support, just like any movement or protest, but it drew hundreds of thousands of people together fighting for the common goal. The activists who participated in the movement gave courage to those who were afraid to stand up, and that courage is still felt today, while women still aren't equal to men.
Consequences: The effects of this movement on America were very positive. The movement caused America to see that women should be more equal to men. Women today are still not completely equal to men, but the changes that have occurred have granted women more freedom of choice for their place in society. Now, women feel like they can choose a career, instead of being forced by society to be a housewife and nothing more, against their wishes. This problem today is not brought up enough for some people to realize it is still a problem, but it comes up in the work place when a women finds out she isn't getting paid as much as a man who is doing the same job as she is. Because of the activists during the time, this women today who isn't getting paid enough now has the courage to stand up to her boss and demand equality in her workplace. This specific movement isn't still going on today, but women are still fighting for their rights in many different ways.
